It’s time we change…

It’s time we change our attitudes about the future:
from anxiety about aging to joy about living.

In partnership with 3 renowned scientific experts and long-time optimist Sarah Jessica Parker, RoC® is launching the #LookForwardProject. This new initiative is dedicated to providing education and resources on the clinically proven power of optimism and its positive impact on mental wellbeing, stress reduction, skin health and longevity.

UNCOVERING THE NEED FOR OPTIMISM

We partnered with Dr. Daisy Robinton, Molecular Biologist and Women’s Health Advocate, to better understand women’s views about aging – Are women anxious about getting older? If so, what are the underlying causes behind this anxiety?

We conducted a quantitative study with 600 women in the United States and France, confirming the prevalence of “age anxiety” and women’s desire to become more optimistic.

What we found

of women ages 25-69 feel anxious about getting older
of these anxieties is related to the way they look (e.g. lines, wrinkles)
of women are worried about their appearance as they age, while only 43% are worried about money for retirement
of women who are pessimistic about getting older feel that society and social media are the main trigger
of women expressed interest in learning tools that can help them live a more optimistic life

“When our research revealed that more women are worried about their aging appearance than something as important as being set up financially for the later stages of life, this opened our eyes in a big way. If we center the conversation about aging on ‘looking forward’ instead of ‘looking older,’ we can change this sentiment and improve women’s experiences of aging throughout their lifespan.”

OPTIMISM: IT’S SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN

Despite this widespread age anxiety, there is growing scientific evidence that embracing optimism has a positive impact on our futures. We’ve consulted with Dr. Deepika Chopra, the Optimism Doctor®, in identifying some of the long-term benefits of optimism.

People who practice optimism…

Stay healthier
over time
Optimists have a 24% increased likelihood of no chronic diseases, no cognitive impairment, and good physical health over time.1
Improve mental
resilience
Optimism is a key tool used in cognitive behavioral therapy, helping people reframe how they think about themselves and their futures in a more positive light.2
Live
longer
Optimists live an average 11-15% longer3 and women who are optimistic have greater odds of living above the age of 90.4
Have
smoother skin
Anxiety about the future causes stress, leading to a loss of collagen & elastin that affect our skin’s health. But practicing optimism is like using an antioxidant – it helps reduce stress and in turn, keeps our skin smoother long-term.5
